Armed Security Guards

Licensed Armed Coverage For Elevated-Risk Deployments

Armed security is not a default upgrade from unarmed coverage. It is a higher-responsibility deployment used when the threat profile, asset value, site history, or client requirements justify a stronger deterrent and a more controlled response posture.

Our armed programs are built for clients who need licensed officers, clear use-of-force standards, stronger documentation discipline, and a vendor that treats armed deployment as a compliance and liability issue, not just a staffing choice.

California Compliance

California Licensing Requirements For Armed Guards

In California, an armed security guard must hold a valid BSIS Security Guard registration and a BSIS Firearms Permit, also referred to by BSIS as an Exposed Firearms Permit. BSIS states that firearms permit applicants must already be a registered security guard or other qualifying license holder, complete the required firearms training and qualifications, and complete the required background review and application process.

That matters because an armed officer is not simply an unarmed guard carrying a weapon. The armed role carries separate licensing, qualification, and compliance requirements, and clients should expect those requirements to be taken seriously on every armed post.

Deployment Fit

When Armed Security Is Appropriate

High-value asset protection, including jewelry, cannabis, cash-intensive businesses, and other theft-sensitive operations.
High-crime area deployments where deterrence needs to be visible, credible, and backed by licensed armed presence.
Executive protection details or private assignments where the threat profile requires a higher level of readiness.
Overnight monitoring of properties with a significant theft, burglary, or targeted-loss history.
Government, institutional, or regulated facilities with specific armed-post requirements.

Training Standard

What Armed Guards Do Differently

Armed guards are not just unarmed guards with a firearm. The assignment requires elevated standards around judgment, restraint, escalation, and legal compliance.

Use-of-force protocols built around lawful escalation and decision-making under pressure.
Weapons-retention awareness and firearm-handling standards appropriate to active duty environments.
De-escalation expectations before any firearm is drawn, with emphasis on controlling situations without unnecessary force.
Clear understanding of legal authority, operational limitations, and when law enforcement must take over.
Higher documentation standards for any use-of-force, weapons-related, or escalation-driven incident.

Risk Management

Liability And Insurance Matter More On Armed Posts

Armed deployments require more than staffing. They require a security provider that understands the added liability profile and carries the operational discipline to manage it properly.

Watchful Guard approaches armed coverage with the appropriate insurance considerations for armed deployments, and our armed officers are expected to meet the state training and licensing requirements tied to the role.
